Our Word Walk involves creating a pathway of words on the hallway floor.
One of the reasons I love to use the floor so much is that we live in a rental property and therefore cannot really display much on the walls. The floor, however, can have things taped to it freely as it can be cleaned off without the worry of re-plastering and painting. Yeah for the floor!
For this particular word walk, we concentrated on the words with the sound "oa" (as in boat, ocean, joke, follow).
The boys were encouraged to help write words containing the sound "oa" on small pieces of cardboard.
Any letters which made the long 'o' vowel sounds (e.g., o, ow, oa, o_e), we wrote in red. The idea was to reinforce to the boys that these are the letters that create the sound.
Finally, the boys helped to stick the words to the hallway floor using sticky tape.
Hopefully, as the boys move past this word walk often during the day, they'll be reminded of which letters form the long 'o' vowel sounds. So far, it seems to be working well. :o
