This Surprise Art Project for kids is quirky, easy and fun to do. All you need are some pens and paper and you're reading to go.
Our boys enjoyed doing this art project because of the 'surprise' factor. It meant they could take something cute and fury and turn it into something less cuddly. Maybe it's a boy thing but they did enjoy doing this!
Our thanks to Jeanette at Craft Whack for introducing this idea to us.
Here's an example of our surprise art project.
This is what the picture looks like folded ...
and unfolded ...
So know you know what a shocked turtle looks like!
How To Create Your Own Surprise Art Project
Start by folding paper simply. You'll need to create two folds like this ...
No specific measurements are necessary. You just need enough room on the folded paper to create your drawing and then room on the inside fold to add the 'surprise' part of your drawing.
We used A3 sized paper but really this art project could be made on any sized paper.
The trick is to make sure that you draw your creature so that the mouth/body/legs can be extended. It has to look good closed but also make sense when it's open. This is how we did the turtle:
The shell of the turtle finished above the fold line. The legs were drawn below the fold line. The mouth sits along the fold line with the bottom of the head below the fold line.
This is what the turtle looked like when opened up ...
It was then just a case of adding in a few lines to connect everything up ...
Of course, you have to add details like teeth and colour!
More Surprise Art Project Examples
Our youngest son decided he wanted to draw a bunny ... with teeth! The project was named, "The Killer Bunny!"
The oldest is a Minecraft fan so he went with a cubed-shape creature which he entitled, "Dangerous Wolf!"
As you can see, both boys chose a different approach to their drawings. One used felt pens and 'scribbly' colouring while the other used pencil and explored with smudging the lead. You could also use paint or even collage.
As for the type of creature you draw ... well that's limited only by your imagination!
Enjoy creating your own Surprise Art Project. We'd love to see what you create so feel free to post a photo to our Facebook page or leave a comment on this post. You'll find more art activities on our Pinterest Boards as well.
Have a great day exploring art with your child!
