I'm thinking of putting up a new sign in our house... "Slow! Children at play!"
Okay this may seem like a strange sign to display indoors, especially considering the words are from a traffic sign normally placed on roads near playgrounds and are meant for drivers of motor vehicles.
However, the message really does apply to parenting as well as traffic.
There are times when it is oh so easy to get caught up in the rush of life. There's so much to do, appointments to keep, places to go, people to see. So many times I find myself rushing through this task and onto the next.
When it comes to children, there's also a rush. They must learn this, do that, go here, be there. However, the truth of the matter is that children desperately need time to play without being rushed.
Children need the adults to go 'slow' and let them play! When children are playing, they are learning, experimenting, exploring, hypothesising, testing, discovering, verifying and much, much more.
Perhaps such a sign would remind me to stop for two minutes and think ... "Slow. Children at play! They are learning through their play. They are working hard." In this way, everything will be put back into perspective.
More than that, the stress of trying to rush here and there will disappear and children's childhood will be enjoyed once more - by children and by the adults in their lives.
So yes, I need this sign in my house to remind me all is well. Just slow down and let the children play!
