This week we picnicked by a local lake surrounded by abundant natural play materials.
I loved watching the way the boys found items in nature to play with. No plastic or man-made toys were in sight. Instead there were branches, pine cones, rocks, an abandoned log, sand and water. The boys had a fantastic time!
Before long, a game developed in which the boys decided they couldn't walk on the sand and had to make 'stepping stones' out of what they could find (e.g., pine cones) to move between the rock formations.
Needless to say, there was a lot of problem-solving, creativity, communication and cooperation happening.
The afternoon reminded me that some of the greatest play equipment is often available in nature.
The best thing, it was all free!
