How do the word blending cups work?

One cup is nestled inside another. As you turn the inside cup, the letters written on it align with the letters marked on the outside cup to form new words. It's that simple.

I have found these cups are very effective when helping children to blend letters together to form simple words. Each word blending cup focuses on a word family.

How to make word blending cups

You need two cups for each word family.
The inside cup turns to make new words
Important: we used foam cups because they have a wide edge showing when the cups are stacked together. This edge allows plenty of room to write on the cups so the letters are clearly displayed.

Write the initial consonant on the lip of the inside cup. Write the word ending on the outside cup.

For example, for ag family words, write these letters on the edges of two cups:

Outside cup: ag
Inside cup: b, g, j, l, n, r, s, t, w, z, br, dr, fl, sn

Short a word blending cups

Word Blending Cups for Short A Vowel Sounds

As we've been working with the short vowel sound for a, we made 6 cups for the word families of an, ap, at, ad, am, and ag.

Outside cup: an
Inside cup: b, c, f, m, p, r, t, v, br, cl, pl, sc, sp, th

Outside cup: ad
Inside cup: b, d, f, h, l, m, p, s, gl

Outside cup: ap
Inside cup: c, g, l, m, n, r, s, t, cl, fl, sl, sn, str, tr, wr

Outside cup: am
Inside cup: d, h, j, r, s, y, cl, gr, sc, sl, sw, tr, ex

Outside cup: at
Inside cup: b, c, f, h, m, p, r, s, br, ch, fl, sc, sp, spl, th

Write the word ending on the bottom of the cups

To help keep things organised, we wrote the appropriate word family on the base of the inside cup. This means if the cups do get separated for some reason, it will be easy to match the appropriate cups again.

I really like the way the foam cups slide and turn easily. More importantly, children enjoy playing with them.

We'd love to hear how your word blending cups go. Feel free to leave a comment on this post or on our facebook page. Have fun!
