Today we made leaf creatures using autumn leaves we've collected from trees around our neighbourhood.
Actually, because we live in the semi-tropics, finding deciduous trees which drop their brightly coloured leaves on the ground for eager children to collect, proved somewhat of a challenge.
We ended up going on a massive bike ride up and down streets looking for deciduous trees and managed to find three! The bike ride in itself, along with the tree hunting expedition, added to the enjoyment of the whole activity.
Once we'd collected our leaf treasure, it was time to make some leaf creatures.
I wasn't sure if the moisture in the leaves would eventually make the leaves go brown after they had been laminated. Therefore, I ironed the leaves, after covering them with a couple of sheets of newspaper. (I'm ever so thankful for all those free local newspapers which continually appear in our front yard!)
I hope that by ironing the leaves so they were dryer, their colour would be maintained longer.
We laminated the leaves.
We left extra space around each leave so that the boys would have room to draw legs, arms, hair, etc., on their leaf creatures.
Time for some creativity.
Armed with permanent markers, the boys added details to the leaves to turn them into leaf creatures.
The leaf creatures were cut out.
The finished leaf creatures were displayed for all to see.
I love the colours in the leaves.
While this was a relatively short activity to do, the boys enjoyed it.
These leaf creatures were created as part of our focus on gardening and plants. For more art, maths, science and language ideas regarding gardening and plants, feel free to have a look at 42 Gardening Activities for Children.
Leaf creatures could probably be done with normal leaves (ie. the non-deciduous variety) but we'll have to experiment with these as we've not tried it before.
Have you created leaf creatures? If so, how did you do it?
