About Susan

If you're reading this, then you probably want to know Who is Susan Syddall? or What sort of experience or qualifications does Susan Syddall have to back up what she says on this site?

After all, you want information from someone with relevant knowledge or experience. For example, if you want to know about sausages, you'd probably ask a butcher rather than a gardener! Okay ... so I don't know about making sausages and my gardening skills are limited at best. However, I am passionate about stories and children and combining the two together!

My Qualifications:

As for qualifications ... I hold a Bachelor of Teaching Degree (Early Childhood) and a Masters of Education (TESOL).

More importantly, however, I have the privilege of being a homeschool "Mum" to our two energetic and curious boys (currently aged 7 & 5 years [going on 17 and 25 they think]). In many ways, this is my most valuable qualification as I've learnt an enormous amount by being a parent.

My Experience:

I've been a teacher for more years than I care to say (over 20). During this time, I've taught in various early childhood facilities both in Australia and in Hong Kong. My Hong Kong position involved teaching children for whom English is a second or third language.

I've also held the positions of a director in a childcare and preschool centre and a college educator teaching trainee teachers.

My most valued experience, however, is being ... you guessed it ... 'Mum' to our two boys. Reading books to our two boys has been a big part of life. We've read hundreds and hundreds of books in the last few years and therefore have a lot of experience in combining children and stories.

In addition to writing children's books, I've had the privilege of writing and delivering pre-service learning materials for early childhood students. I've also written many magazine articles and newsletters about early childhood issues for parents, carers and educators.

Currently, I am home-schooling our two boys. This is a new experience for both myself and our boys ... so we're all learning together! :o

Why Do I Write Children's Books?

I have a keen desire to foster a love of reading in children. When children love reading, they embark on a life-long journey of discovery as they venture into books and other reading materials.

There are some absolutely fantastic children's books and then there are others which ... shall we say ... at best take up space on the library shelf. I write because I want to create quality books for children which will:

  • capture their interests
  • inspire them to read,
  • foster creativity
  • kindle imaginations
  • increase knowledge and
  • build and expand vocabularies.

I enjoy creating the illustrations for the books which aim to make the stories come alive. Currently, the illustrations are all created on computer using a drawing programme combined with a computer tablet and pen.

I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the information offered within this website and that it will prove helpful. This information has been written to help you make the most of stories with children in your care.

Above all, I hope that you will enjoy a story with your child today!
