Today we started on a project that will transform the hallway at the front door into a fun learning space for sight words.

The aim is to make a network of roads on the floor to use with cars and trucks that will also reinforce the sight words we are currently focusing on.
We started work with the roads using what we had in the resource cupboard – coloured contact paper. This was cut into strips.

It was a bit tricky trying to get the backing off the contact – both for the boys and myself! It took perseverance (along with fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination) to get each piece separated but we did succeed!

I confess that I was just about to stick the roads on the floor and when it hit me! What was I doing??? This was a project the boys could design the road system all by themselves.

The more opportunities children have to make decisions for themselves (e.g., where should the roads go), the better they became at decision making. Creativity is also fostered.
Another bonus of letting the boys put the roads down was that I didn’t have to crawl all over the floor! My knees rejoiced! I’ve lost count of the number of pants I’ve worn holes in at the knees!
Once the roads were down, it was time to mark lines on them with a permanent marker.

Next, we added some crazy houses. These were made out of cardboard and sticky taped to wooden blocks.

The blocks enabled the buildings to stand up.

These houses are blank (i.e., without words written on them) so you can write the sight words you are targeting on them. If you laminate them, you could change the words as needed.
Next it was time to play. Each boy took turns to read a sight word from the extra sight word cards I had. Each card showed one sight word which was also displayed on a crazy house.

They then had to drive their car to the correct house and park there. We continued doing this until each house had a car parked next to it.
The aim of this game was to encourage the boys to read sight words in a fun and interactive way.
