Extension Activities for Fly

Extension Activities for Fly
Here are some extension activities for Fly … as in Fly from the story “It’s A Bad Day To Be A Fly!”

These extenstion activites have been designed to help your child gain the most out of his/her reading experience with this story. The extension activities include art, maths and language experiences and provide plenty of variety for hours of enjoyment.

DIY Compound Word Game

DIY Compound Word GameDIY Compound Word Game is a fun matching game which is really easy and inexpensive to make.

The pegs add to the appeal of the activity. Plus there’s the added advantage of strengthening small motor muscles as pegs are squeezed and clipped on cardboard once they’ve been matched.

Leave A Note

Leave A Note
One way to make reading fun is to leave a note for your child to find.

I was reminded of this just recently.

At the end of the day, I went to go to bed only to discover that was going to be impossible! The bed had been overtaken by dinosaurs which had been strategically placed there by two young men. The dinosaurs were on the attack.

What was a person to do? The way I saw it, I had two options.

Change the Story

Change the StoryA great way to extend children’s creative abilities and problem-solving skills is to take a story book and change some aspect of it.

For example, focus on a problem the character in the story is faced with and encourage children to come up with different solutions.

We did this recently with a wonderful picture book story entitled, “Great Galloping Galoot” by Stephanie Thatcher.

Three Dimensional Cardboard Umbrellas

3D umbrellas

We’ve been learning about the short vowel sound ‘u’ for umbrella.

As an extension activity, we made three dimensional umbrellas on which Daniel helped to write words containing the short ‘u’ vowel sound. The umbrellas were hung up and made an attractive ‘u’ word display.

Word Walk

Word Walk
Our Word Walk involves creating a pathway of words on the floor.

One of the reasons I love to use the floor so much is that we live in a rental property and therefore cannot really display much on the walls. The floor, however, can have things taped to it freely as it can be cleaned off without the worry of re-plastering and painting. Yeah for the floor!

For this particular word walk, we concentrated on the words with the sound “oa” (as in boat, ocean, joke, follow).

Silhouette Drawing

Silhouette DrawingThis was an art idea that was inspired from the illustrations in a children’s book that we’ve recently been enjoying entitled, “Frog and Fly” by Jeff Mack.

This book contains six slurpy stories which are easy to read and full of humour. Throughout the book, Frog always gets the better of Fly. However, in the last story, Fly has the last word. Towards the end of the book, the illustrations depict a night scene in which the background is purple and the characters are drawn in black silhouettes.

I love getting ideas for children’s drawings from picture books. As this form of illustration seemed simply, we decided to give it a go.

Scrambled Words Game – Short Vowel ‘O’ Words

Scrambled WordsScrambled words is a fun word game which encourages children to sound out words and spell them. The beauty of this game is that it can be adapted to accommodate the varying needs of different children, making it easier or harder as need be.

You are welcome to download a free printable which focuses on short vowel ‘o’ words.
